Hyundai Theatre Company

Founded in 1976, Hyundai Theatre Company has staged 120 works and held more than 4100 performances in 35 years of its history.

The company has shown the powerful potential of the Korean performance industry and has worked to expand the scope of its audience through its various and creative performance initiatives, which include enhancement of traditional drama, longer presentations of classical works, development of musical productions, professionalization of children’s musicals, establishment of academies for theatrical talent, international exchanges of performance arts, and inauguration of new theatres to promote young talents and procure prospective audiences for the future.

1970s

In September 1976, the Hyundai Theatre Company was founded with its threefold goal of treating drama in manner that was specialized, professional, and scholarly. Introducing up-to-date, systematic structures, the company strove to break the stagnated performances of the period, and by offering new theatrical subjects and themes, it contributed to changing the course of the history of Korean theatre.

1980s

The company produced musicals for the first time in the history of Korean theatre, anticipating today’s popularity of musicals in Korea.

1990s to Present

From Hwarang Wonsul to Another Sun, the company created and staged a number of musicals with hard work and pride.

Among the works are Jangbogo, which is about a great man who first attempted sea trade, the Tripitaka Koreana, which portrayed the will of the people of Goryeo dynasty to overcome national hardships through the creation of eighty thousand blocks of the Tripitaka Koreana, and Another Sun, which showed the meaning of love and hope through the spirit of Korean myth. Moreover, the musical Jangbogo received a great deal of praise during its 7 years of performance throughout a total of 26 cities in 24 countries, from Los Angeles in 1995 to Paris in 2002. Starting from an initial performance abroad in Tokyo, Japan in 2000, Tripitaka Koreana was staged throughout 7 cities in 4 countries. The company staged Another Sun at the New York City Center in 2008, attesting to the originality and creativity of Korean musicals as well as Korean culture.
